The Poor are always with us,

The Terminally Stupid acquire institutional papers and go into politics to represent them.

People are generalising too much it is not a matter if whether a parent or two couldn't bothered getting out of bed to do lunch etc or booze or drugs ,the problem is as I pointed out, parental poverty. if a parent is on the minimum wage and paying at least $600 a week rent and at least $300 a week for food then all the other incidentals, there is the problem the parent is poor not the children, they don’t have to pay the bills . Try and get that and think about it the low wage economy that is causing parental poverty. not every low wage parent is a boozer or druggie or lazy.

However you completely overlook the "Working for families" benefit or/and the Accomodation supplementary benefit. In my experience I have yet to come across someone in genuine poverty that is either employed and/or drug and alcohol free. There are numerous welfare agencies and support networks out there but they are less than enthusiastic when they see the bulk of the cash going into stupid decisions. Lord knows how they'd treat ardern and her twits ......

What I fail to understand is when kids come to school without a lunch that there is no follow up to the parents to see if there is a problem. Sickness? Injury?

I am sure there are kids coming without lunches because mum or dad didn’t get out of bed, hungover, drugged etc.

Such patents need to have a visit from the welfare people. And action plans agreed, Added support provided when required.

it is wrong that this doesn’t happen

That was part of Bill English's plan. That's why it was succeeding, that's why ardern dumped it.

Agreeing with many of the comments below, i.e.

We don't know the true meaning of 'poverty' in this relatively wealthy country (so far). Rather than 'child poverty' much of the material deprivation that exists is more like child abuse, by adults who put their own needs before those of the children supposedly in their care.

Generally the key to raising standards of living is to improve the economic performance of a nation. The rich will get richer, for sure, but the poor will also get less poor.

Education is the means by which the poor jump into the rich waka. Although for that to happen the concept needs to be woven into whichever culture.

Such weaving won't be achieved by…
