Rodney talks to Dr Michael Johnston, from The New Zealand Initiative about learning, the psychology of learning ("a total lack of constraint is not good for creativity"), the unhappy state of NZ's universities, and what the Ministry of Education wants to do to science (ditch physics and chemistry).
This is a wide-ranging and animated discussion touching on the similarity between science and democracy regarding the necessity of disproving theories; the psychology of military leadership; Karl Popper's 'paradox of tolerance'; the relatively brief existence of New Zealand's universal franchise and having always taken it for granted - learning how to defend free speech.

Here's a link to the Article by Michael Johnston (I'm not a fan of pod-casts) https://www.nzinitiative.org.nz/reports-and-media/opinion/the-ministry-of-ignorance-strikes-again/
Oh dear this Tolbert is endorsed by the conman Hendy who managed to convince an ignorant uneducated cabinet that his modelling was spot on so he should get lots of our money. This when we all knew that if what he put in was what the Govt wanted to see then the model would confirm that position. And this Tolbert signed the petition against the Listener 7. That makes what follows in the article complete nonsense and gibberish right there without any other analysis being required.
And here we go with the Herald "Opinion Piece" trying its best to justify this nonsense. Article written by Sara Tolbert, Associate Professor of Science and Environmental Education at University of Canterbury. She co-wrote the Science Curriculum Refresh, so no wonder she is doing her best trying to defend the dumbing down of our population.... The fact that she is the co-writer was omitted from the Herald Article of course... "Disclosure statement
Sara Tolbert receives funding from the Teaching and Learning Research Initiative (TLRI). She also consults for the New Zealand Ministry of Education and is a co-writer to the New Zealand Curriculum Refresh for the science learning area". 🙄 https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/opinion-nz-curriculum-refresh-the-world-faces-complex-challenges-and-science-education-must-reflect-that/EHQJZJWA4FECHANWGLH7PJCPDM/?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_campaign=nzh_fb&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR2Kk1wrzXO_rI7LhmdpG5CYPnihT4wsXiRWug3prmTOFjanOP6mIjcmMro#Echobox=1688861747
The new science curriculum is to include matauranga Maori. Presumably, also included will be the Druids’ Big Book of Spells, alchemy, astrology and Old Moore’s Almanac.
