Just finished listening to the interview What is needed is school choice and a reduction of the power of the teachers unions. This would be achieved with vouchers and only for attendance not enrolment
A cynically simple check to determine the caliber of the school and the dedication and commitment of the teaching fraternity at any secondary school, is to check the number of cars in the staff carpark a week before the new term starts in the new year. Its also worth observing and monitoring who and how many staff exit the school grounds by 3-30 pm each school day. If the the only cars in the carpark belong to the school secretary and or the caretaker, the school has a problem.
I am also very cynical about the need to have a 'teachers only day' the week the school returns from a break. Why can they not meet and sort themselves before the term begins?........ they used to in my day! Very hard on parents organizing day care and disruptive for everyone, kids included.
Teachers are actually paid well for time expended in the classroom, especially if you count the number of days annual holiday, Don't tell me its all spent in preparation, Just try ringing a teacher during the school holidays. In fact time away from the classroom 'on holiday' is sufficient for some teachers I know to run very lucrative online businesses.
