Matariki has more relevance to New Zealand now than Easter, Christmas and Boxing Day and it embraces our values much more than Halloween or Guy Fawkes day. Māori have always celebrated Matariki and its great to see overwhelmingly support for this indigenous festival. For those who believe another holiday negatively affects the economy, let’s drop King‘s Birthday holiday.

New Zealand has the most holiday's in the all the countries of the World. I am appalled at how many holidays we get. How can they expect to do anything around here. I burnt a fire and they narked on me and that was a ritual fire one that is not marked here in New Zealand and now they want a bonfire. Next I want Science to do up some explosive Gunpowder as Fireworks and then I will be happy to shoot some to the stars. Remember when I told them about the Alderbran and the Maori shot me down and then they found out it was right.

NZ has a dozen public holidays a year.

France (14), Japan (14), Croatia (14), Philippines (about 15), Portugal (14), Thailand (19) and others have more.

If it pleases the Maori to have matariki then by all means keep it, but like Fathers Day and Mothers Day it should be made a fixed Day ie Sunday and not be a paid holiday.

That way the celebration is retained and the employers can achieve some productivity.

I cant quite figure out what kind of a holiday the State has sponsored for us with Matariki ? We are not celebrating an event, or anyone, or their birthday. The govt has thoughtfully created a pagan festival for us to collectively wish for a better future. All their other efforts for our better future have failed, so I guess Wishful Thinking is the best tool they have left. It just keeps reminding me of Chris Hipkins claim that becoming a woman is just a matter of wishful thinking. I think the pagan gods need some sacrificing of woke politicians, to make our wishes come true.
