I've said before and I'll repeat it until I'm blue in the face.

Prisons don't work.

For anyone.

Prisons are a boys or girls club that only serve as temporary shelter to those that will never change. And a school for them to teach young offenders , often on their first lag, how to game and rort the rules. I'm not against prisons perse. But they should be reserved for the repeat offenders. No. Not 49 or so arrests. After 3 offenses, off you go, and pack your pajamas and your toothbrush. You're in here for a long time, 5 years minimum.

The problem is this.

There are no hard consequences for a first offense, for any crime committed b…

I like the ideas you express Put an ankle braclet on and limit their travel etc. Give them a timetable that MUST be adhered to or else. Lay out the consequences of non-compliance and stick to it.

Keep them out of jail but under strict supervision

quite ironic that Ardern has more security around her than ever before, at great cost to the taxpayer - oh I wonder why, obviously she doesn't feel safe!!!!!.......

she is a disgrace to the country, when people fear for their lives, from thugs that should be locked up, whilst trying to make a living in this broken land.....

Definition of self defence should be widened so that dairy owners can use whatever means they like to defend themselves and property.with absolute immunity from prosecution.Instead of destroying the confiscated weapons we could have given these to the victims but at least we should never have destroyed them- could even have been shipped to Ukraine.i have said it before and I will say it again birching or caning is a good solution they will not offend again-.these felons deserve no mercy

Yes your assessment of the current situation is essentially correct. What I am saying is that regarding the sort of premeditated attacks innocent people are facing the response and the need to protect themslves needs to be placed in a different class of self defence.I think your instructors observation was on the money.

Two hundred years ago in England convicted male and female criminals were sent to the hulks, a fleet of near derelict ships moored off shore, in inlets and waterways around that country. Many of those criminals were held pending 'export' to Australia to "do their time. according to the seriousness of the crime". Prison colonies were built both on the mainland and on islands such as Tasmania and Norfolk Island. Many prisoners were starved and brutalised many died. Those that survived and were released (no social security , it hadn't been invented) went on to provide labour for the new colony as indentured labourers. Some ex-criminals realised the opportunities available in a new land, grasped the opportunity and…

Given that the police + justice system is no longer a sufficient deterrent to armed robbery in NZ, dairy owners and others would be justified in organising their own self-defence of property and person by whatever means is necessary, balancing the various consequences should those measures not be available when they were needed versus the potential consequences if they needed to be used.
